Were we happier in the 50s?
31 May 2006
The Happiness Formula on BBC2 claimed that in the 1950s people were generally happier than they are today. A poll conducted in 1957 showed that 52% of people thought that they were "very happy". In a similar poll carried out today only 36% of people said that they were "very happy". Our own survey about life in Britain in the sixties showed that many people preferred life in the sixties than today.
Rising incomes and technological progress do not seem to have made us happier. What do you think? If you were around in the 50s, were you happier then? If so, why? Let us know.
